Art & Design

Curriculum Intent

The National Curriculum states that ‘Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity’. At St Joseph’s art and design is a valued part of our broad and balanced curriculum. We aim to engage, inspire, and challenge pupils by giving children opportunities to develop and deepen skills alongside nurturing creativity through the encouragement of expression of individual interests and ideas. Children gain an understanding of how art and design both reflect and shape our local and global history and how this continues to contribute to the culture, creativity, and wealth of our nation. We encourage our pupils to develop their critical thinking and independently adapt their work, showing care, consideration, and pride in their achievements.

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

  1. Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  2. Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  3. Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  4. Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Curriculum Implementation

At St Joseph’s, Art and design is taught as a part of our Blocked Curriculum to ensure children have the opportunity to create meaningful pieces of work they can take pride in. We follow the National Curriculum and the key knowledge and skills that children acquire and develop throughout each block have been mapped to ensure progression from EYFS to Year 6. Key Stage 1 and 2 children have personal sketch books where they record their thoughts, ideas, experimentations, and evaluations of their work.

Curriculum Impact

Pupils are assessed against the National Curriculum objectives. Children are assessed throughout the block and teaching is adapted accordingly to ensure progression. We aim to equip children with the skills to encourage a love of art and the expression of creativity throughout their lifetime.
